That line from From Here to Eternity is still loitering in my brain, the one about how nothing can ever be the same, even when you do it all just the way you did before.

I was never into facebook, pretty much rejected it from the moment of its inception - my real name? On the internet? No way. I had little interest in twitter, and never even tried instagram or Tiktok. They just weren't my thing.

When I am on the internet, it's almost always on something older or much slower paced: Forums, websites, or old-school-style blog sites, like this dreamwidth right here. I could well argue that for me, the way I interact and engage with the internet truly hasn't changed much, that in rejecting the modern internet, I've been able to go back to using it just the way as we all did before.

I don't think that's true, though. The fact of the matter is, time moves on, and as it moves, it changes. The era's different, I'm different, the internet itself is fundamentally different, and at the end of the day, that's not something you can ignore.

Which isn't all bad (God knows I would never want to go back to 2010 era internet speeds), but it's worth remembering that sometimes, the best way to return to what you loved from the past is to turn your head forward and start moving on.

I'm not returning to where I once was, but I am trying to make my experience here something more like I want it to be.
